A group of 11 PCH athletes took part in today’s Connaught Track and Field Championship, held in Athlone IT. A long day resulted in some great success for the school, particularly in the sprint events.

Ríona King completed well in both the shot putt and the 300m, putting in fine performances in both events.

In the sprint events, Luke O’Shaughnessy was just pipped for 1st place in the 400m, managing to keep something in the tank for the 4x400m relay held later on in the day. Luke will now look forward to representing the school at the national championship. Kacper Poniatowski also performed well in the Senior 100m, finishing a credible 4th.

Ríona Quinn and Amy Halligan both lined out for the senior girls 200m, with Ríona placing 2nd, also qualifying for the national championships.

In the 4x400m relay, the senior boys team put in a tough shift but in stiff competition couldn’t manage qualification on the day. Well done to Luke O’Shaughnessy, Kacper Poniatowski, Marcus O’Shaughnessy and Jonathan McGrath.

Our biggest success came from the senior girls relay team of Ríona Quinn, Aisling Quinn, Amy Halligan and Yasmin Donnelly. The team scorched to victory, with a good 5m to spare at the finish line, to become Connaught Champions! The girls qualified for the Connaught Championships with the help of Yana Nungesser, who stepped in as a sub last week. The team will now complete for a national title on 2nd June in Tullamore. Well done girls.
