We welcome the involvement of parents as partners in the education of their children and the co-operation and support of the wider community in delivering a quality teaching and learning experience for all.
The HSE’s National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) and Healthy Ireland wish to draw your attention to the importance of sun protection and the need to discourage the use of sunbeds among adolescents.
Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, sunburn and sunbed use in childhood are risk factors for developing skin cancer in adult life.
Please find attached a letter that provides links to resources and supports, information on trends in sun protection and sunbed use among adolescents, what schools can do to and information on what parents and guardians can help to protect children and young people.
Kind regards,
Dr Breeda Neville,
Consultant in Public Health Medicine,
Chair of the National Skin Cancer Prevention Implementation Group,
