Presentation College Headford were delighted to host our first  Primary schools football tournament at Headford GAA field on Wednesday 16th November. We were blessed with  sunshine and blue skies on the day and it added to the excitement and fun of the day.
11 local primary schools participated with 19 teams entered in the Boys/Mixed and Girls competition. The tournament was run by our senior students who showed fantastic leadership on the day.
The schools that entered were Shrule, Headford Boys and girls, Annaghdown, Kilcoona, Donaghpatrick, Claran, Belclare, Castlehackett and Cross. The other team being Claregalway Educate Together who deserve a special mention as it was their first ever GAA tournament and many of their players first ever game. They were fantastic in their efforts and they embodied what the tournament was about; respect, inclusion and fun.
The football skills on display in the girls and boys/mixed competition were very impressive and it is clear lots of great work is being done in the clubs and schools in developing the skills of the game.
In the girls Shield final, Cross came out on top against a spirited Annaghdown team. The Girls Cup saw Claran narrowly defeat Kilcoona in a terrific final. In the Boy’s cup final, Claran defeated Shrule after extra time in a end to end semi final and were unlucky themselves to go down in extra time to a superb Donaghpatrick team who had defeated Kilcoona in the other semi final. Castlehackett celebrated a win over their neighbour’s Belclare in the shield final.
All in all the tournament was a great success and we are looking forward to next to next years edition. Thanks to Headford GAA  for the use of their fantastic facilities and all those who keep them in such good condition and a big thank you also to the teachers for entering your team and for all your encouragement on the day.
