Comhghairdeas ó chroí to the Under 14 team who had a fabulous victory over Scoil Mhuire Strokestown in a Connacht final in Bekan on Thursday. The ladies defeated their opponents 1-13 to 3-1. None of this would have been possible without the tireless work of their coaches, Mr. Danny Corbett and Ms. Emma Sweeney. More detailed match report and further pictures of this great day to follow

Our U-14 girls finished off their season in style when claiming the Connacht LGFA U-14 Cup in Bekan on Thursday. The final score was PCH 1-13 Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown 3-1. All season we were used to starting games on the front foot and building up big leads. However, this was not the case in Bekan as Strokestown was aided by a strong breeze in the first half and got off to a flying start. They had two goals and a point on the scoreboard after seven minutes and we were under pressure. However, the girls rose to the challenge and amazingly restricted their opponents to just one more score in the entire game. What makes this all the more impressive is the fact that Strokestown was regularly scoring over thirty points per game on their run to the final. Points from Alisha O Malley (2) and Katie Farragher and a Roisin Sweeney goal just before the break left the half-time score 2-1 to 1-3.

We hit the ground running after the break and kicked the next five points as we made full use of the wind at our backs. However, our Roscommon opponents, who brought a serious level of physicality to the game, weren’t willing to roll over easily and found the net to leave the minimum between the sides, 1-8 to 3-1. This didn’t deter our players and they kicked another five points in a row to run out deserving winners. Our second-half points came from Alisha (5), Katie (3), Alison Fahy, and Lily Jacques. Sixty five girls signed up for U-14 football this year which shows the phenomenal interest there is in ladies football in the school. Over forty of them went on to play in our six championship matches over the last three months which is something that the team management is very proud of.

Our squad was made up of players from Annaghdown, Caherlistrane, St Furseys, Shrule/Glencorrib, The Neale and Kilmaine, and our success is a testament to the quality coaching the players have received in their own clubs over the years. Mr. Corbett and Ms. Sweeney were their school coaches and both couldn’t praise the players highly enough for their performances and commitment over the course of the season.
